Kelsey’s incredible rise to the top of women’s track cycling is unprecedented. Within two years of her first ride in a velodrome, Kelsey earned a world record, became Pan American Games champion, and World Cup medallist in track cycling. She claimed gold for the sprint at her Olympic Games debut in Tokyo 2020.
Now, with Paris 2024 on the horizon, Kelsey is preparing to defend her Olympic title. Currently competing in the UCI Track Champions League in Mallorca, Berlin, Paris, and the Grand Final in London, we asked Kelsey to share some of her insights and performance principles:
What are your goals for your upcoming events?
The goals are to go out there and give my best – physically, tactically, technically, and mentally. And, if all is executed properly, I believe I can win.
What does your pre-race routine look like?
A pre-race routine… is still in the works. Before heading to the track, I try not to think about racing. But, once at the track, I am dialled in and have a pretty good idea of what efforts to do, what to eat, and how to get ready for the race.
What is the best piece of advice you have gained from your coaches? What do you look for from your coaches?
Control what I can control.
I look for a coach that believes in me. No matter what.
How do you prepare yourself mentally for competition?
I want to win. My competitiveness comes out and I just try and stay as calm as possible until the race. Because I know once I am on the line, I will be ready to go.
What strengths do you believe makes a great athlete?
You must be hard-working, driven, consistent, coachable, and a good teammate.
Do you think mindset is a factor in your success?
100% yes.
You were quoted characterising yourself as “never technically strong” in any of the sports you competed in but “had the athleticism.” – do you still think that is the case?
I think it is a work in progress. I’ve never committed myself to one sport like I have with track cycling, and I think technically I have improved a lot. Still, there is a long way to go, but I don’t solely rely on my athleticism anymore.
How do you feel about working with Pro-Noctis? What are you hoping to gain from your relationship with them?
I am very excited to be working with Pro-Noctis. I hope to fine-tune my mental game as well as learn and grow as a person.
Having Pro-Noctis as a part of the team was the last piece of the puzzle to make me a truly complete athlete.
