Where do you want to be?

Susan Jeffers once said and it’s a title of one of her books, ‘Feel the fear and do it anyway’. However, during the current climate, we are locked down and only permitted to go outdoors for certain things, people are feeling an abundance of fear and obviously don’t like it. Why? because it’s not normal, it is literally life-threatening, and we want life to go back to the way it was a few weeks back.
We are experiencing the issues around Covid-19 through our 5 senses and the limbic part of our brain, the bit that has kept us alive for thousands of years is driving the fear. This oldest part of the brain can drive us to the freeze, flight & fight responses. As we initially feel and experience the fear we begin to get stressed which triggers the release of cortisol into our bodies and as you may be aware, too much of this on a regular basis can hinder your health dramatically.

You can make a shift from experiencing and feeling this fear by stopping for a minute, taking control of your thoughts and emotions and begin to engage your neocortex, the logical, problem-solving part of your brain. Being in the present, the here and now will help you to reset and take some positive steps forward. Here is the first opportunity to enter the learning zone. The current situation is not going to change anytime soon. Thinking slowly with a logical approach and evaluating the information will start to make you a little happier about yourselves and the situation we find ourselves in. “Control the controllables” is a mantra we use with our Elite performers during human performance training and that is all you can do, stop worrying about issues that are outside your control. The issue of panic buying is foremost and supermarkets have taken steps to resolve this. Panic buying is driven by fear. You can’t control other people’s panic buying but you can control how you react to it and moreover, how you want to grow during these uncertain times. Adapting, keeping positive emotional states, living in the present and focusing on the future is a must going forward.

Where are you now? Fear, Learning or Growth zone?

Where do you want to be?
